Essential oils are distilled from various plants and have many functions within those plants. Some attract insects for pollination, some repel them, and certain ones even protect the plant from bacterial infection and help close up wounds. It’s not much of a stretch to see how these properties can be used in the same way for humans or animals.  Because of the volatile nature of the oils, their molecules evaporate into the air as soon as the lid comes off the bottle. When we or animals smell them, their chemical constituents are absorbed via the olfactory system into the brain's limbic system. This is where emotions, memory, and certain regulatory functions of the body are situated.

How do you use essential oils?

It has been known for quite some time that the safest ways to use oils are to dilute them for topical use or diffuse them for direct inhalation. When applied topically, it is suggested that essential oils should always be applied with a barrier substance (like a carrier oil, lotion, or aloe jelly). If using in a bath, it is even more important to mix the oils with a barrier substance first, as oil and water don’t mix.

For those inhaling essential oils, it is recommended to use a waterless or water-based diffuser. Waterless diffusers are great for those with respiratory issues or immunocompromised states, as the deletion of water reduces the risk of waterborne bacteria being distributed.
